New Competitive Reality in Sports

The New England Patriots. The Chicago Cubs. The Golden State Warriors. None are a collection of stars. Only one of the three is considered to be the most talented in their league. Yet these three teams dominate the current sports scene.

Who's on their heels? The Atlanta Falcons, The San Francisco Giants and the San Antonio Spurs. Again teams - not collections. We are in a new competitive reality. It's not talent or even analytics. Both are important, but ultimately it is the culture of trust, honesty and accountability that lays at the foundation of everything.

We are in a new competitive reality. It's not talent or even analytics. Both are important, but ultimately it is the culture of trust, honesty and accountability that lays at the foundation of everything.

I was fortunate in my first career to be part of five Super Bowl Championship teams, contribute to a World Series team and several NHL playoff runs. Since then I've had several clients enjoy successful IPO's. I've witnessed vast improvements in productivity and morale. And one client - who is part of a huge enterprise that puts a lot of stock in employee engagement - blow away historical records for improved engagement after they focused on building a team, not a collection.

Let me encourage you to think today about your current team. Compare them not against the bad or mediocre teams of your past, but of their vast potential. What could you accomplish if you worked together as a team, and not a collection of people in the same building?
